Homocysteine and One-carbon Metabolism in Aging and Alzheimer's Disease

演讲者: Ramon Diaz-Arrastia, MD, PhD,        associate Professor Department of Neurology,        The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas Brief introduction of Dr. Diaz-Arrastia’s talk Over the last 25 years, the amino acid homocysteine has emerged as a significant risk factor for a number of age-related diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, osteoporosis, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease. Since homocysteine elevations are effectively treated with B-vitamin therapy, these epidemiologic observations have led to attempts to prevent or treat age-related diseases with vitamin supplements, with variable success. Dr. Diaz-Arrastia’s talk will focus on recent clinical studies on Hcy metabolism in normal aging, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as work on rodent models of hyperhomocysteinemia that may provide clues as to the cellular effects of hyperhomocysteinemia and give insights into future therapeutic strategies.
